Company History:
Cascade Alpine Guides was founded by Steve Guthrie and Dan Phillips in 1993. Our administrative headquarters was located in the living rooms of Steve and Dan’s homes. Initial course offerings were limited to crevasse rescue and rock climbing. In the spring of 1994 the program was expanded to include the Basic Mountaineering Course and additional rock climbing courses. Early on, much of the administrative time was spent in the pursuit of permits for various Forest Service Districts and National Parks. In November of 1994, the office was moved to small space in downtown Bellevue, Washington. For the first time, we were able to consolidate administrative, gear and instructional services under one roof.

Fall of 1994:
Cascade Alpine Guides was awarded a permit to teach cross-country skiing and snowshoe travel in Mt. Rainier National Park. This led to a permit the following spring to teach glacier travel courses on the Winthrop Glacier. Cascade alpine Guides was the first guide service awarded a new commercial climbing permit in Mount Rainier National Park since 1968. The following year, much time and effort was spent pursuing an application to lead summit climbs on Mount Rainier. In April of 1995, Cascade Alpine Guides, along with four other guide services, was awarded a permit to guide summit climbs three times per summer. About the same time, we received a permit to operate in the Leavenworth Ranger District and established a relationship with Havasupai Tribal Council allowing us to offer hiking trips into the Grand Canyon.

Spring of 1996:
Cascade Alpine Guides was awarded a permit to operate in North Cascade National Park and Mount Rainier summit climbs increased from three to four per year. In November of 1996, we led our first climb of Mexico’s Pico de Orizaba. Business continued to increase annually and the number of guides hired went from two in 1995 to ten in 1998.

1998 - 1999:
Steve Guthrie became sole owner of Cascade Alpine Guides in July 1998 when Dan Phillips left the company to pursue other interests. In April of 1999 Eric M. Sach and James Ault joined Steve Guthrie as general partners and relocated administrative operations to Ballard, Washington.

October 2000:
Cascade Alpine Guides began work with REI in Redmond Washington in October of 2000 teaching indoor rock climbing on the in-store pinnacle. The REIger. Additionally, we began to offer a full slate of outdoor instructional courses and activities.

March 2001:
Our first paddling trip to Belize was added to the selection of adventures offered.

April 2001:
Rob Veal acquired Cascade Alpine Guides from Steve, Jim and Eric. At this time the administrative offices and equipment space were moved to its current location in Sammamish Washington.

March 2003:
Cascade Alpine Guides began coordinating The Redmond REI Pinnacle events, including staffing the Pinnacle for group rentals. This allows for REI to better focus on providing quality outdoor gear to their members.

Winter 2004:
Cascade Alpine Guides began offering Avalanche Safety courses. This program is coordinated by Gary Brill. Gary brings over 26 years of avalanche experience to over 200 students annually.
